This paper introduces a unified concept and algorithm for the fractional-step (FS), artificial compressibility (AC) and pressure-projection (PP) methods for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The proposed FSAC-PP approach falls into the group of pseudo-time splitting high-resolution methods incorporating the characteristics-based (CB) Godunov-type treatment of convective terms with PP methods. Due to the fact that the CB Godunov-type methods are applicable directly to the hyperbolic AC formulation and not to the elliptical FS-PP (split) methods, thus the straightforward coupling of CB Godunov-type schemes with PP methods is not possible. Therefore, the proposed FSAC-PP approach unifies the fully-explicit AC and semi-implicit FS-PP methods of Chorin including a PP step in the dual-time stepping procedure to a) overcome the numerical stiffness of the classical AC approach at (very) low and moderate Reynolds numbers, b) incorporate the accuracy and convergence properties of CB Godunov-type schemes with PP methods, and c) further improve the stability and efficiency of the AC method for steady and unsteady flow problems. The FSAC-PP method has also been coupled with a non-linear, full-multigrid and full-approximation storage (FMG-FAS) technique to further increase the efficiency of the solution. For validating the proposed FSAC-PP method, computational examples are presented for benchmark problems. The overall results show that the unified FSAC-PP approach is an efficient algorithm for solving incompressible flow problems.

A new approach for reducing error of the volume penalization method is proposed. The mask function is modified by shifting the interface between solid and fluid by $√νη$ toward the fluid region, where ν and η are the viscosity and the permeability, respectively. The shift length $√νη$ is derived from the analytical solution of the one-dimensional diffusion equation with a penalization term. The effect of the error reduction is verified numerically for the one-dimensional diffusion equation, Burgers' equation, and the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. The results show that the numerical error is reduced except in the vicinity of the interface showing overall second-order accuracy, while it converges to a non-zero constant value as the number of grid points increases for the original mask function. However, the new approach is effective when the grid resolution is sufficiently high so that the boundary layer, whose width is proportional to $√νη$, is resolved. Hence, the approach should be used when an appropriate combination of ν and η is chosen with a given numerical grid.

The solution of systems of hyperbolic conservation laws remains an interesting and challenging task due to the diversity of physical origins and complexity of the physical situations. The present work introduces the use of the partial differential equation (PDE) transform, paired with the Fourier pseudospectral method (FPM), as a new approach for hyperbolic conservation law problems. The PDE transform, based on the scheme of adaptive high order evolution PDEs, has recently been applied to decompose signals, images, surfaces and data to various target functional mode functions such as trend, edge, texture, feature, trait, noise, etc. Like wavelet transform, the PDE transform has controllable time-frequency localization and perfect reconstruction. A fast PDE transform implemented by the fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is introduced to avoid stability constraint of integrating high order PDEs. The parameters of the PDE transform are adaptively computed to optimize the weighted total variation during the time integration of conservation law equations. A variety of standard benchmark problems of hyperbolic conservation laws is employed to systematically validate the performance of the present PDE transform based FPM. The impact of two PDE transform parameters, i.e., the highest order and the propagation time, is carefully studied to deliver the best effect of suppressing Gibbs' oscillations. The PDE orders of 2-6 are used for hyperbolic conservation laws of low oscillatory solutions, while the PDE orders of 8-12 are often required for problems involving highly oscillatory solutions, such as shock-entropy wave interactions. The present results are compared with those in the literature. It is found that the present approach not only works well for problems that favor low order shock capturing schemes, but also exhibits superb behavior for problems that require the use of high order shock capturing methods.

We present a new splitting method for time-dependent convention-dominated diffusion problems. The original convention diffusion system is split into two sub-systems: a pure convection system and a diffusion system. At each time step, a convection problem and a diffusion problem are solved successively. A few important features of the scheme lie in the facts that the convection subproblem is solved explicitly and multistep techniques can be used to essentially enlarge the stability region so that the resulting scheme behaves like an unconditionally stable scheme; while the diffusion subproblem is always self-adjoint and coercive so that they can be solved efficiently using many existing optimal preconditioned iterative solvers. The scheme can be extended for solving the Navier-Stokes equations, where the nonlinearity is resolved by a linear explicit multistep scheme at the convection step, while only a generalized Stokes problem is needed to solve at the diffusion step and the major stiffness matrix stays invariant in the time marching process. Numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate the stability, convergence and performance of the single-step and multistep variants of the new scheme.

We investigate several robust preconditioners for solving the saddle-point linear systems that arise from spatial discretization of unsteady and steady variable-coefficient Stokes equations on a uniform staggered grid. Building on the success of using the classical projection method as a preconditioner for the coupled velocity-pressure system [B. E. Griffith, J. Comp. Phys., 228 (2009), pp. 7565–7595], as well as established techniques for steady and unsteady Stokes flow in the finite-element literature, we construct preconditioners that employ independent generalized Helmholtz and Poisson solvers for the velocity and pressure subproblems. We demonstrate that only a single cycle of a standard geometric multigrid algorithm serves as an effective inexact solver for each of these subproblems. Contrary to traditional wisdom, we find that the Stokes problem can be solved nearly as efficiently as the independent pressure and velocity subproblems, making the overall cost of solving the Stokes system comparable to the cost of classical projection or fractional step methods for incompressible flow, even for steady flow and in the presence of large density and viscosity contrasts. Two of the five preconditioners considered here are found to be robust to GMRES restarts and to increasing problem size, making them suitable for large-scale problems. Our work opens many possibilities for constructing novel unsplit temporal integrators for finite-volume spatial discretizations of the equations of low Mach and incompressible flow dynamics.

We have developed efficient numerical algorithms for solving 3D steady-state Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations with excess chemical potentials described by the classical density functional theory (cDFT). The coupled PNP equations are discretized by a finite difference scheme and solved iteratively using the Gummel method with relaxation. The Nernst-Planck equations are transformed into Laplace equations through the Slotboom transformation. Then, the algebraic multigrid method is applied to efficiently solve the Poisson equation and the transformed Nernst-Planck equations. A novel strategy for calculating excess chemical potentials through fast Fourier transforms is proposed, which reduces computational complexity from $\mathcal{O}$($N^2$) to $\mathcal{O}$($NlogN$), where $N$ is the number of grid points. Integrals involving the Dirac delta function are evaluated directly by coordinate transformation, which yields more accurate results compared to applying numerical quadrature to an approximated delta function. Numerical results for ion and electron transport in solid electrolyte for lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are shown to be in good agreement with the experimental data and the results from previous studies.

In this paper, we develop and study numerical methods for the two-mode shallow water equations recently proposed in [S. STECHMANN, A. MAJDA, and B. KHOUIDER, Theor. Comput. Fluid Dynamics, 22 (2008), pp. 407–432]. Designing a reliable numerical method for this system is a challenging task due to its conditional hyperbolicity and the presence of nonconservative terms. We present several numerical approaches – two operator splitting methods (based on either Roe-type upwind or central-upwind scheme), a central-upwind scheme and a path-conservative central-upwind scheme – and test their performance in a number of numerical experiments. The obtained results demonstrate that a careful numerical treatment of nonconservative terms is crucial for designing a robust and highly accurate numerical method.

In this paper we present an efficient algorithm for the calculation of photonic crystal band structures and band structures of photonic crystal waveguides. Our method relies on the fact that the dispersion curves of the band structure are smooth functions of the quasi-momentum in the one-dimensional Brillouin zone. We show the derivation and computation of the group velocity, the group velocity dispersion, and any higher derivative of the dispersion curves. These derivatives are then employed in a Taylor expansion of the dispersion curves. We control the error of the Taylor expansion with the help of a residual estimate and introduce an adaptive scheme for the selection of nodes in the one-dimensional Brillouin zone at which we solve the underlying eigenvalue problem and compute the derivatives of the dispersion curves. The proposed algorithm is advantageous not only as it decreases the computational effort to compute the band structure but also because it allows for the identification of crossings and anti-crossings of dispersion curves, respectively. This identification is not possible with the standard approach of solving the underlying eigenvalue problem at a discrete set of values of the quasi-momentum without taking the mode parity into account.

In this paper, the mechanisms of material removal in chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) processes are investigated in detail by the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. The feature-scale behaviours of slurry flow, rough pad, wafer defects, moving solid boundaries, slurry-abrasive interactions, and abrasive collisions are modelled and simulated. Compared with previous work on CMP simulations, our simulations incorporate more realistic physical aspects of the CMP process, especially the effect of abrasive concentration in the slurry flows. The preliminary results on slurry flow in CMP provide microscopic insights on the experimental data of the relation between the removal rate and abrasive concentration and demonstrate that SPH is a suitable method for the research of CMP processes.
