The staggered discontinuous Galerkin (SDG) method has been recently developed for the numerical approxmation of partial differential equations. An important advantage of such methodology is that the numerical solution automatically satisfies some conservation properties which are also satisfied by the exact solution. In this paper, we will consider the numerical approximation of the inviscid Burgers equation by the SDG method. For smooth solutions, we prove that our SDG method has the properties of mass and energy conservation. It is well-known that extra care has to taken at locations of shocks and discontinuities. In this respect, we propose a local total variation (TV) regularization technique to suppress the oscillations in the numerical solution. This TV regularization is only performed locally where oscillation is detected, and is thus very efficient. Therefore, the resulting scheme will preserve the mass and energy away from the shocks and the numerical solution is regularized locally near shocks. Detailed description of the method and numerical results are presented.

In this paper, we propose a numerical method for solving the heat equations with interfaces. This method uses the non-traditional finite element method together with finite difference method to get solutions with second-order accuracy. It is capable of dealing with matrix coefficient involving time, and the interfaces under consideration are sharp-edged interfaces instead of smooth interfaces. Modified Euler Method is employed to ensure the accuracy in time. More than 1.5th order accuracy is observed for solution with singularity (second derivative blows up) on the sharp-edged interface corner. Extensive numerical experiments illustrate the feasibility of the method.

This paper deals with a more general class of singularly perturbed boundary value problem for a differential-difference equations with small shifts. In particular, the numerical study for the problems where second order derivative is multiplied by a small parameter $ε$ and the shifts depend on the small parameter $ε$ has been considered. The fitted-mesh technique is employed to generate a piecewise-uniform mesh, condensed in the neighborhood of the boundary layer. The cubic B-spline basis functions with fitted-mesh are considered in the procedure which yield a tridiagonal system which can be solved efficiently by using any well-known algorithm. The stability and parameter-uniform convergence analysis of the proposed method have been discussed. The method has been shown to have almost second-order parameter-uniform convergence. The effect of small parameters on the boundary layer has also been discussed. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme, several numerical experiments have been carried out.

For any given matrix $A∈\mathbb{C}^{n×n}$, a preconditioner $t_U(A)$ called the superoptimal preconditioner was proposed in 1992 by Tyrtyshnikov. It has been shown that $t_U(A)$ is an efficient preconditioner for solving various structured systems, for instance, Toeplitz-like systems. In this paper, we construct the superoptimal preconditioners for different functions of matrices. Let $f$ be a function of matrices from $\mathbb{C}^{n×n}$ to $\mathbb{C}^{n×n}$. For any $A∈\mathbb{C}^{n×n}$, one may construct two superoptimal preconditioners for $f(A)$: $t_U(f(A))$ and $f(t_U(A))$. We establish basic properties of $t_U(f(A))$) and $f(t_U(A))$ for different functions of matrices. Some numerical tests demonstrate that the proposed preconditioners are very efficient for solving the system $f(A)x=b$.

We develop a Lions domain decomposition algorithm based on a cell functional minimization scheme on non-matching multi-block grids for nonlinear radiation diffusion equations, which are described by the coupled radiation diffusion equations of electron, ion and photon temperatures. The $L^2$ orthogonal projection is applied in the Robin transmission condition of non-matching surfaces. Numerical results show that the algorithm keeps the optimal accuracy on the whole computational domain, is robust enough on distorted meshes and curved surfaces, and the convergence rate does not depend on Robin coefficients. It is a practical and attractive algorithm in applying to the two-dimensional three-temperature energy equations of Z-pinch implosion simulation.

We analyze here, a two-grid finite element method for the two dimensional time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with non-smooth initial data. It involves solving the non-linear Navier-Stokes problem on a coarse grid of size $H$ and solving a Stokes problem on a fine grid of size $h, h <<H$. This method gives optimal convergence for velocity in $H^1$-norm and for pressure in $L^2$-norm. The analysis mainly focuses on the loss of regularity of the solution at $t = 0$ of the Navier-Stokes equations.

This paper proposes and analyzes semi-discrete and fully discrete hybrid stress finite element methods for elastodynamic problems. A hybrid stress quadrilateral finite element approximation is used in the space directions. A second-order center difference is adopted in the time direction for the fully discrete scheme. Error estimates of the two schemes, as well as a stability result for the fully discrete scheme, are derived. Numerical experiments are done to verify the theoretical results.

In this paper we present a fully discrete $A$-$ϕ$ finite element method to solve Maxwell's equations with a nonlinear degenerate boundary condition, which represents a generalization of the classical Silver-Müller condition for a non-perfect conductor. The relationship between the normal components of the electric field $E$ and the magnetic field $H$ obeys a power-law nonlinearity of the type $H × n = n × (|E × n|^{α-1}E × n)$ with $α ∈ (0,1]$. We prove the existence and uniqueness of the solutions of the proposed $A$-$ϕ$ scheme and derive the error estimates. Finally, we present some numerical experiments to verify the theoretical result.

We present a conservative formulation and a numerical algorithm for the reduced-gravity shallow-water equations on a beta plane, subjected to a constant wind forcing that leads to the formation of double-gyre circulation in a closed ocean basin. The novelty of the paper is that we reformulate the governing equations into a nonlinear hyperbolic conservation law plus source terms. A second-order fractional-step algorithm is used to solve the reformulated equations. In the first step of the fractional-step algorithm, we solve the homogeneous hyperbolic shallow-water equations by the wave-propagation finite volume method. The resulting intermediate solution is then used as the initial condition for the initial-boundary value problem in the second step. As a result, the proposed method is not sensitive to the choice of viscosity and gives high-resolution results for coarse grids, as long as the Rossby deformation radius is resolved. We discuss the boundary conditions in each step, when no-slip boundary conditions are imposed to the problem. We validate the algorithm by a periodic flow on an $f$-plane with exact solutions. The order-of-accuracy for the proposed algorithm is tested numerically. We illustrate a quasi-steady-state solution of the double-gyre model via the height anomaly and the contour of stream function for the formation of double-gyre circulation in a closed basin. Our calculations are highly consistent with the results reported in the literature. Finally, we present an application, in which the double-gyre model is coupled with the advection equation for modeling transport of a pollutant in a closed ocean basin.
