We consider using a discrete network model in combination with continuous nonlinear optimization models to solve the problem of optimizing channels in nanoporous materials. The problem and the hierarchical optimization algorithm are described in [2]. A key feature of the model is the fact that we use the edges of the finite element grid as the locations of the channels. The focus here is on the use of the discrete model within that algorithm. We develop several approximations to the relevant flow and a greedy algorithm for quickly generating a "good" tree connecting all of the nodes in the finite-element mesh to a designated root node. We also consider Metropolis-Hastings (MH) improvements to the greedy result. We consider both a regular triangulation and a Delaunay triangulation of the region, and present some numerical results.

About thirty years ago, Achi Brandt wrote a seminal paper providing a convergence theory for algebraic multigrid methods [Appl. Math. Comput., 19 (1986), pp. 23–56]. Since then, this theory has been improved and extended in a number of ways, and these results have been used in many works to analyze algebraic multigrid methods and guide their developments. This paper makes a concise exposition of the state of the art. Results for symmetric and nonsymmetric matrices are presented in a unified way, highlighting the influence of the smoothing scheme on the convergence estimates. Attention is also paid to sharp eigenvalue bounds for the case where one uses a single smoothing step, allowing straightforward application to deflation-based preconditioners and two-level domain decomposition methods. Some new results are introduced whenever needed to complete the picture, and the material is self-contained thanks to a collection of new proofs, often shorter than the original ones.

In this paper, we propose a multigrid algorithm based on the full approximate scheme for solving the membrane constrained obstacle problems and the minimal surface obstacle problems in the formulations of HJB equations. A Newton-Gauss-Seidel (NGS) method is used as smoother. A Galerkin coarse grid operator is proposed for the membrane constrained obstacle problem. Comparing with standard FAS with the direct discretization coarse grid operator, the FAS with the proposed operator converges faster. A special prolongation operator is used to interpolate functions accurately from the coarse grid to the fine grid at the boundary between the active and inactive sets. We will demonstrate the fast convergence of the proposed multigrid method for solving two model obstacle problems and compare the results with other multigrid methods.

In this paper, we introduce a diffuse interface model for describing the dynamics of mixtures involving multiple (two or more) phases. The coupled hydrodynamical system is derived through an energetic variational approach. The total energy of the system includes the kinetic energy and the mixing (interfacial) energies. The least action principle (or the principle of virtual work) is applied to derive the conservative part of the dynamics, with a focus on the reversible part of the stress tensor arising from the mixing energies. The dissipative part of the dynamics is then introduced through a dissipation function in the energy law, in line with Onsager's principle of maximum dissipation. The final system, formed by a set of coupled time-dependent partial differential equations, reflects a balance among various conservative and dissipative forces and governs the evolution of velocity and phase fields. To demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model, a few two-dimensional simulations have been carried out, including (1) the force balance at the three-phase contact line in equilibrium, (2) a rising bubble penetrating a fluid-fluid interface, and (3) a solid particle falling in a binary fluid. The effects of slip at solid surface have been examined in connection with contact line motion and a pinch-off phenomenon.

An efficient multigrid solver for the Oseen problems discretized by Marker and Cell (MAC) scheme on staggered grid is developed in this paper. Least squares commutator distributive Gauss-Seidel (LSC-DGS) relaxation is generalized and developed for Oseen problems. Residual overweighting technique is applied to further improve the performance of the solver and a defect correction method is suggested to improve the accuracy of the discretization. Some numerical results are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and robustness of the proposed solver.

A finite-element multigrid scheme for elliptic Nash-equilibrium multiobjective optimal control problems with control constraints is investigated. The multigrid computational framework implements a nonlinear multigrid strategy with collective smoothing for solving the multiobjective optimality system discretized with finite elements. Error estimates for the optimal solution and two-grid local Fourier analysis of the multigrid scheme are presented. Results of numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Algebraic Multigrid (AMG) methods were developed originally for numerically solving Partial Differential Equations (PDE), not necessarily on structured grids. In the last two decades solvers inspired by the AMG approach, were developed for non PDE problems, including data and image analysis problems, such as clustering, segmentation, quantization and others. These solvers share a common principle that there is a crosstalk between fine and coarse representations of the problems, with flow of information in both directions, fine-to-coarse and coarse-to-fine. This paper surveys some of these problems and the AMG-inspired algorithms for their solution.
