In this paper, an inverse source problem for the time-fractional diffusion equation is investigated. The observational data is on the final time and the source term is assumed to be temporally independent and with a sparse structure. Here the sparsity is understood with respect to the pixel basis, i.e., the source has a small support. By an elastic-net regularization method, this inverse source problem is formulated into an optimization problem and a semismooth Newton (SSN) algorithm is developed to solve it. A discretization strategy is applied in the numerical realization. Several one- and two- dimensional numerical examples illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

In this paper, our main purpose is to establish the existence of positive solution of the following system 

Numerical instability may occur when simulating high Reynolds number flows by the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). The multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) model of the LBM can improve the accuracy and stability, but is still subject to numerical instability when simulating flows with large single-grid Reynolds number (Reynolds number/grid number). The viscosity counteracting approach proposed recently is a method of enhancing the stability of the LBM. However, its effectiveness was only verified in the single-relaxation-time model of the LBM (SRT-LBM). This paper aims to propose the viscosity counteracting approach for the multiple-relaxation-time model (MRT-LBM) and analyze its numerical characteristics. The verification is conducted by simulating some benchmark cases: the two-dimensional (2D) lid-driven cavity flow, Poiseuille flow, Taylor-Green vortex flow and Couette flow, and three-dimensional (3D) rectangular jet. Qualitative and Quantitative comparisons show that the viscosity counteracting approach for the MRT-LBM has better accuracy and stability than that for the SRT-LBM.

An analysis is performed to study the influence of local thermal non-equilibrium (LTNE) on unsteady MHD laminar boundary layer flow of viscous, incompressible fluid over a vertical stretching plate embedded in a sparsely packed porous medium in the presence of heat generation/absorption. The flow in the porous medium is governed by Brinkman-Forchheimer extended Darcy model. A uniform heat source or sink is presented in the solid phase. By applying similarity analysis, the governing partial differential equations are transformed into a set of time dependent non-linear coupled ordinary differential equations and they are solved numerically by Runge-Kutta Fehlberg method along with shooting technique. The obtained results are displayed graphically to illustrate the influence of different physical parameters on the velocity, temperature profile and heat transfer rate for both fluid and solid phases. Moreover, the numerical results obtained in this study are compared with the existing literature in the case of LTE and found that they are in good agreement.

Mast cells (MCs) play an important role in the immune system. Through connective tissues, mechanical stimuli activate intracellular calcium signaling pathways, induce a variety of mediators including leukotriene C$_4$(LTC$_4$) release, and affect MCs' microenvironment. This paper focuses on MCs' intracellular calcium dynamics and LTC$_4$ release responding to mechanical stimuli, explores signaling pathways in MCs and the effect of interstitial fluid flow on the transport of biological messengers and feedback in the MCs network. We use a mathematical model to show that (i) mechanical stimuli including shear stress induced by interstitial fluid flow can activate mechano-sensitive (MS) ion channels on MCs' membrane and allow Ca$^{2+}$ entry, which increases intracellular Ca$^{2+}$ concentration and leads to LTC$_4$ release; (ii) LTC$_4$ in the extracellular space (ECS) acts on surface cysteinyl leukotriene receptors (LTC$_4$R) on adjacent cells, leading to Ca$^{2+}$ influx through Ca$_{2+}$ release-activated Ca$^{2+}$ (CRAC) channels. An elevated intracellular Ca$^{2+}$ concentration further stimulates LTC$_4$ release and creates a positive feedback in the MCs network. The findings of this study may facilitate our understanding of the mechanotransduction process in MCs induced by mechanical stimuli, contribute to understanding of interstitial flow-related mechanobiology in MCs network, and provide a methodology for quantitatively analyzing physical treatment methods including acupuncture and massage in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

In this paper, a mathematical model is developed to study the wave propagation in an infinite, homogeneous, transversely isotropic thermo-piezoelectric solid bar of circular cross-sections immersed in inviscid fluid. The present study is based on the use of the three-dimensional theory of elasticity. Three displacement potential functions are introduced to uncouple the equations of motion and the heat and electric conductions. The frequency equations are obtained for longitudinal and flexural modes of vibration and are studied based on Lord-Shulman, Green-Lindsay and Classical theory theories of thermo elasticity. The frequency equations of the coupled system consisting of cylinder and fluid are developed under the assumption of perfect-slip boundary conditions at the fluid-solid interfaces, which are obtained for longitudinal and flexural modes of vibration and are studied numerically for PZT-4 material bar immersed in fluid. The computed non-dimensional frequencies are compared with Lord-Shulman, Green-Lindsay and Classical theory theories of thermo elasticity for longitudinal and flexural modes of vibrations. The dispersion curves are drawn for longitudinal and flexural modes of vibrations. Moreover, the dispersion of specific loss and damping factors are also analyzed for longitudinal and flexural modes of vibrations.

In this paper, a DG (Discontinuous Galerkin) method which has been widely employed in CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) is used to solve the two-dimensional time-domain Maxwell's equations for complex geometries on unstructured mesh. The element interfaces on solid boundary are treated in both curved way and straight way. Numerical tests are performed for both benchmark problems and complex cases with varying orders on a series of grids, where the high-order convergence in accuracy can be observed. Both the curved and the straight solid boundary implementation can give accurate RCS (Radar Cross-Section) results with sufficiently small mesh size, but the curved solid boundary implementation can significantly improve the accuracy when using relatively large mesh size. More importantly, this CFD-based high-order DG method for the Maxwell's equations is very suitable for complex geometries.

The maximum entropy method for the Hausdorff moment problem suffers from ill conditioning as it uses monomial basis {1,$x$,$x^2$,···,$x^n$}. The maximum entropy method for the Chebyshev moment probelm was studied to overcome this drawback in [4]. In this paper we review and modify the maximum entropy method for the Hausdorff and Chebyshev moment problems studied in [4] and present the maximum entropy method for the Legendre moment problem. We also give the algorithms of converting the Hausdorff moments into the Chebyshev and Lengendre moments, respectively, and utilizing the corresponding maximum entropy method.

The differential quadrature method has been widely used in scientific and engineering computation. However, for the basic characteristics of time domain differential quadrature method, such as numerical stability and calculation accuracy or order, it is still lack of systematic analysis conclusions. In this paper, according to the principle of differential quadrature method, it has been derived and proved that the weighting coefficients matrix of differential quadrature method meets the important V-transformation feature. Through the equivalence of the differential quadrature method and the implicit Runge-Kutta method, it has been proved that the differential quadrature method is A-stable and $s$-stage $s$-order method. On this basis, in order to further improve the accuracy of the time domain differential quadrature method, a class of improved differential quadrature method of $s$-stage $2s$-order has been proposed by using undetermined coefficients method and Padé approximations. The numerical results show that the proposed differential quadrature method is more precise than the traditional differential quadrature method.

In this work, the hybrid solution reconstruction formulation proposed by Luo et al. [H. Luo, H. Dai, P. F. de Sousa and B. Yin, On the numerical oscillation of the direct-forcing immersed-boundary method for moving boundaries, Computers & Fluids, 56 (2012), pp. 61–76] for the finite-difference discretization on Cartesian meshes is implemented in the finite-element framework of the local domain-free discretization (DFD) method to reduce the numerical oscillations in the simulation of moving-boundary flows. The reconstruction formulation is applied at fluid nodes in the immediate vicinity of the immersed boundary, which combines weightly the local DFD solution with the specific values obtained via an approximation of quadratic polynomial in the normal direction to the wall. The quadratic approximation is associated with the no-slip boundary condition and the local simplified momentum equation. The weighted factor suitable for unstructured triangular and tetrahedral meshes is constructed, which is related to the local mesh intervals near the immersed boundary and the distances from exterior dependent nodes to the boundary. Therefore, the reconstructed solution can account for the smooth movement of the immersed boundary. Several numerical experiments have been conducted for two- and three-dimensional moving-boundary flows. It is shown that the hybrid reconstruction approach can work well in the finite-element context and effectively reduce the numerical oscillations with little additional computational cost, and the spatial accuracy of the original local DFD method can also be preserved.

The paper makes a comparative study of the finite element method (FEM) and the finite difference method (FDM) for two-dimensional fractional advection-dispersion equation (FADE) which has recently been considered a promising tool in modeling non-Fickian solute transport in groundwater. Due to the non-local property of integro-differential operator of the space-fractional derivative, numerical solution of FADE is very challenging and little has been reported in literature, especially for high-dimensional case. In order to effectively apply the FEM and the FDM to the FADE on a rectangular domain, a backward-distance algorithm is presented to extend the triangular elements to generic polygon elements in the finite element analysis, and a variable-step vector Grünwald formula is proposed to improve the solution accuracy of the conventional finite difference scheme. Numerical investigation shows that the FEM compares favorably with the FDM in terms of accuracy and convergence rate whereas the latter enjoys less computational effort.
